Policies:
Attendance:
As we will be engaging in a considerable amount of in-class work in small groups and pairs, your attendance is necessary in order to get the full experience of the class. Obviously, however, things that are out of our control happen and we do meet three times a week, thus you are allowed three unexcused absences no questions asked. After these three absences, however, your grade on attendance/participation will be negatively impacted by any absence without a legitimated excuse (medical or otherwise) and you might also miss crucial in-class work that can impact your performance in other parts of the course. Please be in touch with me as soon as you know you will miss a class session and make sure to check in with your classmates about missed work. Remember, your absence impacts not only your own experience but that of the rest of the class as well, as we will be deprived of your unique insights. Given the short duration of our meetings any lateness exceeding ten minutes will count as an absence.
Respect:
Throughout the semester will be engaging with sensitive topics of discussion and thus I expect that all students will be respectful of each other and differences in opinion and will be contributors to productive conversations on such topics. While you don’t have to agree with the opinions of your classmates, I do demand that in my classroom you respect their right to have opinions that might differ radically from your own.
Use of Electronics Devices in the Classroom:
In this digital age, we have an enormous number of digital tools at our disposal (many of which also increase accessibility) and thus I would be remiss not to take advantage of such tools and your potential skills with them. Thus I am more than happy to have you use the computers in class during group projects or to use personal laptops to take notes, look up important information, collaborate on googledocs for group projects, etc. However, I will be rather strict that these electronic tools can only be used for purposes relevant to class. That is, there is no use for and will be allowance for cell phones or social media in the classroom, unless it is directly related to an assignment. We have a limited amount of time together, so let’s please take advantage of what time we have and be as “present” as possible with each other. You will have plenty of time to spend on Facebook before and after we meet.
Honor Code:
Upon every individual who is a part of Emory University falls the responsibility for maintaining in the life of Emory a standard of unimpeachable honor in all academic work. The Honor Code of Emory College is based on the fundamental assumption that every loyal person of the University not only will conduct his or her own life according to the dictates of the highest honor, but will also refuse to tolerate in others action which would sully the good name of the institution. Academic misconduct is an offense generally defined as any action or inaction which is offensive to the integrity and honesty of the members of the academic community.

Syllabus Changes
As we will be spending so much of this semester working as a collective, any changes to the syllabus that I might suggest will have to be agreed upon as a whole class as we are all in this together and as such need to share responsibility and power for shaping our collective experience.
